Background
Morpho is a modular on-chain lending stack. At the base sits Morpho Blue: permissionless, isolated markets defined by a collateral asset, a loan asset, an oracle, a liquidation threshold and an interest-rate model. Once deployed, those markets are immutable — no pause button, no governance rewrite of the parameters. On top sit Morpho Vaults, where curators set risk boundaries and allocators place depositor capital across those markets so users can earn without picking every pair themselves.
That two-layer design is the whole product pitch. Aave-style pooled money markets socialize liquidity and risk under one brand; Morpho outsources risk taste to curators and keeps the rails fixed. Institutions and integrators that want custom credit products can spin up markets or vaults without waiting on a DAO listing vote. Depositors inherit curator judgment along with yield. Vault V2 extends that model with adapters, caps and clearer role separation between owner, curator, allocator and sentinel.
MORPHO is the governance token for that system. Its live powers are narrow on purpose: treasury, rewards, and whether to turn on a protocol fee switch. Deployed Blue markets stay beyond its reach. As of now the fee switch is off, so the token does not collect protocol cash flow. Rewards programs can distribute MORPHO to users; that is issuance to activity, not accrual to holders as a class.
Investors argue about two different things at once. One is whether modular immutable markets plus curator vaults keep taking share as preferred credit infrastructure. The other is what MORPHO is worth while economics stay at the vault and integrator layer — some treat the token as a claim on a future fee switch, others as governance over near-zero-fee rails. The lending stack can keep growing either way. The token debate hangs on which story wins.
