Background

XRP (XRP) is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a payments-oriented blockchain designed for fast settlement and low fees. Banks and fintechs have long associated it with cross-border liquidity and bridge-asset use. Ripple, the company most tied to the brand, builds payment products and issued RLUSD, a dollar stablecoin that also lives on XRPL. XRP itself is used for fees, reserves and, in theory, as inventory when the ledger routes between issued assets.

The live debate is not whether XRPL can move value. It is whether that value needs XRP in size. Stablecoins and tokenized assets can settle on the ledger while XRP stays a thin toll and occasional bridge. Spot ETFs and other wrappers create a separate demand channel: capital-markets buying that does not require a bank to carry XRP for every corridor. Escrow releases from Ripple's large locked stash still shape circulating supply over time.

So the token sits between two stories that do not always pull together. One is institutional rails, RLUSD growth and on-ledger finance features that make XRPL look more like settlement plumbing. The other is speculative and ETF-driven ownership of XRP as a liquid large-cap crypto. Payments wins can widen the ledger without tightening the token if routes skip XRP.

For the picture to shift, XRP would need sustained demand as bridge inventory or collateral, not only fee dust and fund flows. Until then it remains a payments-branded crypto whose price can move on regulation and ETF narrative while utility quietly accrues to stablecoins on the same chain.
