LayerZero

Background
Cross-chain apps need a way to move messages and assets without trusting a single bridge custodian. LayerZero is one of the main messaging layers that try to solve that: immutable endpoints on each chain, plus modular verification through Decentralized Verifier Networks and executors that applications configure. Omnichain Fungible Tokens (OFTs) ride on that stack so a token can keep one canonical supply across many networks instead of a stack of wrapped copies.
That design is why ZRO is on investors' screens. LayerZero competes with Wormhole, Chainlink CCIP, Axelar and others for the same interoperability job, and the trust models differ. LayerZero leaves security configuration largely to the integrating app; rivals market fixed verifier sets or oracle-backed floors. After high-profile cross-chain incidents industry-wide, some teams have preferred stricter, less optional security assumptions even when LayerZero still carries heavy message and transfer activity. OFT adoption and stablecoin rails keep the protocol in the middle of omnichain liquidity either way.
ZRO is the governance token. Holders can vote, on a recurring referendum schedule, whether to turn on a protocol fee that would route messaging economics into ZRO burns. Those votes have so far left the switch off, so protocol message volume does not automatically accrue to the token. Adjacent revenue paths — including Stargate activity directed toward ZRO — sit beside that switch rather than replacing the open question of whether fee accrual ever becomes the default.
For ZRO to track the protocol's usefulness, two things would have to stay aligned: LayerZero remaining a default rail for omnichain tokens and messages, and token economics tightening so activity actually reaches holders. The messaging business can keep running with the switch dark. The token thesis is thinner if it stays that way.
