Beam Therapeutics builds medicines by rewriting single DNA letters instead of cutting the double helix. Its base editors are designed to correct point mutations that drive genetic disease, then deliver those edits either as ex vivo cell therapies or as in vivo programs with lipid nanoparticles. That is the platform story: precision editing without the break-and-repair step that defines first-generation CRISPR nuclease drugs.

The pipeline is now the point. Risto-cel, formerly BEAM-101, is an autologous cell therapy for sickle cell disease with dosing complete in the BEACON adult and adolescent cohorts and a biologics license application targeted as early as year-end. BEAM-302 is an in vivo program for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency that has entered a global pivotal cohort. Behind those sit BEAM-301 in glycogen storage disease type Ia, BEAM-304 for phenylketonuria entering the clinic, and earlier work aimed at making hematopoietic stem cell editing possible without the same transplant burden. Competitors already market CRISPR-based sickle cell therapy; Beam is arguing base editing can differentiate on depth of disease correction, manufacturability and safety.

Cash and clinical execution matter as much as the science. Beam is still pre-revenue, burning capital to run late-stage trials and prepare for a possible first launch while expanding the liver and metabolic franchise. Partnerships and platform IP sit in the background; they do not replace the need for clean data and regulatory progress.

For the equity thesis to work, base editing has to prove itself where it counts — risto-cel through regulators, BEAM-302 through pivotal development, and enough follow-on programs that the platform looks like more than one product bet. Technology preference alone does not settle a clinical-stage biotech.
