Green team

The case for

Remedy owns increasingly valuable gaming IP, including CONTROL and Alan Wake, while retaining lower-risk development-fee income from Max Payne 1&2. Resonant gives shareholders much greater participation in owned-IP economics, with Annapurna funding 50% of development while Remedy retains the greater share of game revenue after recoupment.

Pre-launch evidence is encouraging: more than 1.5 million wishlists, healthy preorder momentum, positive hands-on previews and a day-one multi-platform release. The balance sheet also provides resilience, with about $34.4m of cash and liquid investments, $13.7m net cash and positive H1 operating cash flow. If Resonant works, it validates both the franchise and Remedy's transition toward an IP owner-publisher.

Red team

The case against

Firebreak is direct evidence that creative strength does not guarantee publishing success. Remedy impaired roughly $17.3m after its first self-published title disappointed, and prior project write-offs reinforce the risk that years of capitalized development spending can produce poor commercial returns.

At $21.88, the stock is already close to its 52-week high and the ordinary base case offers only moderate upside. The attractive payoff depends heavily on successful upper-tail Resonant outcomes, while founder Markus Mäki's roughly $8.4m July share sale adds a yellow flag ahead of launch. Remedy could ultimately remain an excellent creative studio with structurally volatile economics rather than become a predictable compounder.

valu8 verdict

Remedy remains a speculative starter at $21.88, but CONTROL Resonant must validate self-publishing before full sizing. Owned IP, encouraging launch indicators and balance-sheet resilience create upside, but Firebreak and the now narrower valuation discount keep execution risk material. Reserving most capital for reviews and early launch evidence offers better risk-adjusted timing than aggressively buying before September 24.

The debate

  • Will CONTROL Resonant validate Remedy's ability to commercially self-publish valuable owned IP?unresolved
  • Was Firebreak mainly the wrong product, rather than evidence of a structural weakness in Remedy's publishing capabilities?unresolved
  • Can sustainable post-Resonant EBITDA move materially closer to management's target economics rather than remain near the lower external estimate?unresolved
  • Does successful self-publishing justify valuing Remedy as an IP owner-publisher rather than a lumpy game developer?unresolved

Green team was right

  • Remedy owns valuable franchises and now captures materially more of the economics from successful owned-IP games.
  • Resonant has substantially stronger pre-launch indicators and strategic fit than Firebreak.
  • The balance sheet provides enough resilience that one disappointing launch is not an immediate funding crisis.

Red team was right

  • Firebreak proves Remedy's creative reputation has not yet translated into consistently successful self-publishing.
  • The base-case valuation is no longer deeply discounted after the pre-launch rerating.
  • Game-development economics remain hit-driven, capital intensive and difficult to forecast.

Deciding factor

Whether Resonant proves that Remedy can repeatedly convert its creative strength and owned IP into commercially successful self-publishing economics.

What would change this

  • An 85+ critic score combined with strong early sales and engagement would materially strengthen the thesis and support adding.
  • A sub-80 critic score combined with weak Steam engagement would materially impair the thesis.
  • Evidence that Resonant can generate strong profits without balance-sheet deterioration would support a higher Quality assessment.
  • A decline toward roughly $17.5-$18.6 with the fundamental Resonant thesis intact would materially improve the entry asymmetry.

Key risk

CONTROL Resonant disappoints commercially and undermines the thesis that Remedy can turn strong creative IP into profitable self-publishing economics.

Not covered

Hard post-launch evidence is still missing, particularly Resonant reviews, engagement, paid unit sales and realized publishing economics, while the exact Annapurna post-recoup revenue split is undisclosed.

Strong IP meets unproven publishing economics at the most important launch yet.
